Origin of the Golden Retriever

In 1854 Dudley Coutts Marjoriebanks later known as Lord Tweedmouth purchased the Guisachan house where the first golden retriever was bred in the Scottish Highlands near Glen Affric which consisted of 20,000 acres. In 1868, Nous, a Wavy-coated Retriever, and Belle, a Tweed Water Spaniel were bred together by Lord Tweedmouth. Over time, selective breeding led to the development of the Red Golden Retriever, a variation with a darker coat colour.
